BioGenesis: The Rise, The Fall, The Rebirth
Review By: Jeffery de los Santos
It’s been 11 years since BioGenesis -Chaz Bond on vocals, James Riggs on guitars, Randy Walton on bass and Nevin Cline on drums – debuted their album The Mark Bleeds Through. And after 11 long years, the band has re-formed, adding guitarist Paul Witte to the fold, to deliver their sophomore release The Rise, The Fall, The Rebirth.
The title is very fitting since the band started off so well with the debut release, fell apart around 2005 and was born a-new back in 2009. With the rebirth comes a bit different sound. While the crunchy guitars are still there along with Chaz’s distinctive vocals, the songs are a bit more melodic, more melancholic and even heavier than before. A good example of this is the song “The Mark 12”. which is an updated version of “The Mark Bleeds Through”. The song is a bit slower this time but it’s just massively heavy. Another interesting song is the ballad-like song “Angel”. The vocal performance by Chaz makes it a very haunting song – not cheesy in any way. “Point of Origin” is one of the songs that harken back to The Mark Bleeds Through. And in addition to the 9 tracks on the album, there’s also two bonus tracks “Fallback” and “Catalyst For Malice” which to released but never made it. This is some great metal. Musically BioGenesis has taken from where they left off and have pushed their music into more directions . . . and all while keeping it heavy.
