Mind of the Sick: Possessed (EP)
4 out of 5
By: Tom Metcalf

I was privileged enough to be selected as one of the few to get to listen to and review the latest, upcoming EP “Possessed” from the Christian metal band, Mind of the Sick (MOTS). I have been a Mind of the Sick (MOTS) fan for many years and have always enjoyed the music that Noah Tubbs and his group puts out there. His music has always been free of charge and the lyrics have always been true to his faith.

I have always thought of MOTS’s music as being similar to Powerman 5000, Industrial-Style Metal, with grooves and lyrical rhyming that gets ya thinking, but “Possessed” is a different turn for the band. This new release has a much heavier and darker sound than I have heard from MOTS in the past. The music and the addition of the pain-felt screaming are on target. It leaves the listener with no doubt as to where Noah’s heart sits.

The album is one story of redemption and salvation after another. This stands true in the track “Candy”, which delivers the message of breaking the chains of bondage. Also in the title track, “Possessed”, as it speaks as the outcry of being taken over by the Holy Spirit of God Almighty!

Another standout song on this album is, ‘Bring it’. This song is truthful and to the point with its lyrical content! It’s a song that tells others that if you’re against God then you’re against me. I love the lyrics in this song. It’s the kind of song that you want to throw in Satan’s face! Most of the EP follows the same lines with some subtle changes.

MOTS doesn’t try to mask or disguise what they are about. They are about delivering the message of God whether you’re a brother/sister in Christ or if you’ve lost your way spiritually in this world. Parts of the album, like “RedRope”, is very dark with constant questioning about what your options are going to be, with each souring predicament that Satan throws your way. ”Through The Fire” is my favorite and is one the heaviest and fastest songs on the EP.

Never fear MOTS fans, there are still some hints of old-school MOTS within this EP so you have not been forgotten. This album is a journey and in my opinion is MOTS’ best to date. Musically the band has come a long way in mixing up its heavy riffs and solos throughout the songs. In the past this was not the case, but with “Possessed” I believe MOTS has found their groove and their maturity shows. If you haven’t listened to Mind of the Sick you will be pleasantly surprised with this album. If you are a long time fan, you won’t be disappointed!
