veritas infinita - essence of life_Cover

Every once in a while some solid music appear out of nowhere. Even though Veritas Infinita released their debut EP Wondrous Ways in 2010, they never really surfaced. Only few people seem to have notice them. Now around four years later their long awaited debut album The Essence Of Life has been released.

After an over five minute intro in which the tension builds up, the album opens with ‘Gods Without A Heart’. You can hear right away that the band has been experiencing quite some growth since the release of their 2010 EP, especially in production, but also in vocals and skills. For example in the song ‘Todays World’ we hear some solid riffs and a touch of Celtic with the use of Ulliean Pipes and some well balanced vocals from female vocalist Linda that reminds a bit of Johanna from fellow symphonic metal band HB. Also the song ‘Before Its Time’ is a great track that needs to be mentioned. There is a good balance of strong riffs and bright tones of the piano, however the beautiful vocals in the chorus are the best part of the song. Another song that stands out is ‘Like An Eagle’. Mostly because of its catchy chorus that begs to be sung along.

Unfortunately there are also some weaknesses on the album. For example the Dutch accent which we hear in the intro of ‘The Flight’, but also the vocals in some of the verses are somewhat boring and monotonous. Also in quite a few moments Veritas Infinita seems to be lesser sister of bands like HB or other bands in the symphonic metal genre. Fortunately the band closes their debut album with a beautiful over 7 minute long piano-finale ‘Through Gods Eyes’.

The future of the band was in question shortly after the release of this album when the lead singer and bassist decided to step down. However, the band has announced that they have already begun the process of auditioning replacements and have no plans of slowing down. One fact is for sure; The Essence Of Life is an ok debut album with highlights and weaknesses. It will certainly appeal to fans of bands such as HB, Within Temptation and Delain.
